Digital signing and encryption has been used to authenticate emails in many corporate environment to prevent spoofing. Here’s a simple guide to create a digital signature, import them and use them for personal use. My current choice of personal certificate is issued by Thawte. Thawte’s root certificate has been installed on most computer; therefore the recipient do not need to install custom root certificate to confirm the authenticity.

The first thing that needs to be done is obtaining digital certificate. Thawte’s personal digital certificate can be obtained here. After registration and verification, you can create your own certificate. The default options will allow both digital signing and encryption. Thawte also allows you to create multiple certificate for multiple accounts. Download, import and usage instructions available after the jump.

If you’re using Firefox, the certificate will be imported into the browser. You need to export them as a file then re-import them to your e-mail client of choice. To export the certificate from Firefox:

Click Tools -> Options -> Advanced

Click on View Certificates

Select the Certificate

Click Backup

Now that you have downloaded the certificate you can now import it into your mail client. You will be asked to password protect the certificate. Remember the password that will be used to import the certificate to the mail client. IMPORTANT: Do NOT send your certificate since it contains your private key for decrypting your e-mails. For more info on digital signing and encryption click here.

Importing to Thunderbird

Right click the account that is listed in the certificate and click Properties

Click the corresponding Security section

Click View Certificates

Click Import

Point to the certificate downloaded from Firefox then click OK

You will be asked to create password for “Security Devices” and the password to import the certificate

Under the section “Digital Signing” click select

Choose the certificate and click OK

Thunderbird will ask if you want to use the same certificate for encryption. Click Ok

Check “Digitally sign messages (by default)” then click Ok

Alternatively, when writing a new message click on the envelope icon with the red and gold ribbon

Encrypting

To send encrypted e-mail you have to receive an e-mail from that person with his/her digital signature

After you receive an email with the person’s digital signature, right click the name and choose “Add to Outlook Contacts”. This will import the person’s certificate that’s needed to send out encrypted information to that person.

If you have not received any e-mail with the person’s digital signature and add the certificate to the contact, you won’t be able to encrypt the e-mail and an error message will be generated

When writing a new message click on Options -> Security Settings and check “Add digital signature to this message”, “Send this text message as clear text signed” and “Encrypt message contents and attachments”

Alternatively, when writing a new message click on the envelope icon with the blue padlock on the toolbar

Out of the three parts, this is the part where I stumble upon the most “unexpected” issues. First of all, Live CD does not work on my 2nd-gen Macbook Pro (MBP). There seems to be some problem with the ATI drivers on the Live CD that prevents X from starting up. I have to use the Alternate CD with the text-based-installer. Also, GRUB will not install. Fortunately LILO will be offered and it installs just fine. Finally X will not work after the reboot and you need to install some drivers before it will work.

As a start, put in the CD, choose the CD installer from rEFIt then follow the instructions below:

Proceed with the installation regularly until the HDD partitioning portion

Choose to install on /dev/sda3 and format as “reiserfs” with mount point “/”

After disk is formated, go to shell by pressing “Ctrl+Alt+F2″

Run the following commands:

mkdir /mnt/ubuntu
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/ubuntu
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/ubuntu/swap bs=1024 count=2097152
swapon /mnt/ubuntu/swap

When asked for screen resolution, only press spacebar on 1440×900 or lower

Continue until GRUB installation fails. Ignore the failure and install LILO when prompted.

Installation should complete and you should be able to boot into Ubuntu, without X Windows.

Login the run the following commands:

sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) linux-kernel-headers
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

NOTE: If you don’t know your kernel version number, run the command

echo $(uname -r)

Reboot then run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update

If you don’t hear a login sound, it means your speaker might not be enabled

Troubleshooting

Some warning popup because there is no swap partition / swapon doesn’t work
Ignore it and it will work just fine

Having your ISP delegating the reverse DNS maybe a YMMV scenario. Some will allow you and others will not. If your ISP does allow you to host your own reverse DNS you have to create a zone file for the reverse DNS entry. This is a very easy thing to do if you have a class C subnet, but anything smaller than that or with different IP ranges, it gets complicated. Here’s what they usually have to do on their end, and what you need to do on your end.

ISP end
assuming the class C is 216.237.21.0/24 and the subnet you own is 216.237.21.64/26):

21.237.216.in-addr.arpa [SOA Entries]
21.237.216.in-addr.arpa [NS Servers]

;someone else's entry

I am working on my friend’s site yesterday. She wants to have a photo gallery and wordpress. I checked out Gallery2 and found that there’s a wordpress plugin for it. I installed both (including imagemagick to use with Gallery2) and added the WPG2 plugin. While trying to activate WPG2 on WordPress I kept on getting the message “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error”. I have made sure that I followed the instruction on the readme.txt to the dots, but nothing still comes up.

Therefore I try another plugin called NextGEN Gallery. Everything works great except for the slideshow. Once again I’m stumped on what’s the problem.
When I look at the HTML code, the slideshow code is trying to read a file called “nggextractXML.php”. I try to type in the URL and gets a 404 message. I thought that it was a bug, but I found out that on the server it was listed as “nggextractxml.php”. I download the file to a Windows machine and unzip it using WinRAR. The file name is correct with the upper case.

At that moment, I realized that the problem lies with 1and1.com unzip utility. I have been using the “unzip” command from the CLI and it has always been extracting using the -C option. To solve this I create a “.bash_profile” file under my home directory and added the following line:

alias unzip='/usr/bin/unzip'

If you’re having the same problem as I do, you can either create the file by using the instruction above or run the following command from the SSH:

echo "alias unzip='/usr/bin/unzip'" >> ~/.bash_profile

Or, you could just also download, unzip and upload the Bash Profile

I just found out an easy way to beat most web/content-filtering system (provided SSH traffic is not blocked). SSH is a good choice because it’s natively installed on most Linux and Mac system. Windows user can download a small software called Putty, which can run without being installed. SSH server also available on almost all Linux server as well as some Linux based routers. Here’s how to do it in Windows:

Download Putty and Run

Type in the IP of Linux box or other SSH server you have access to and make sure the port is correct too

Under the tab “Connection –> SSH –> Tunnel” set a local source port *preferrably random number above 1024*

Under destination choose “Dynamic” and “Auto“

Then click open

Open IE or Firefox and find the proxy configuartion

Set your localhost as the SOCKS proxy server and the port is the local source port you choose on Step 3
NOTE: On Firefox choose SOCKS v5, and on IE include “localhost, 127.0.0.1″ as the addresses exempted by the proxy

That’s all needs to be done.

UPDATE:
For those who wants to use it with IM services like MSN, here’s what you need to do:

Goto Tools -> Options -> Connection

Click on Advanced Settings

On SOCKS type 127.0.0.1 and click Test
