http://www.idroidproject.org/wiki/Installing_iDroid_(Linux)

That link is actually for a Linux, so I uses VirtualBox and a Linux (Ubuntu) image file. From there I followed most part of the guide.

However I’ll post my observation (on 2G):

It’s running way too sluggish

Call sometimes doesn’t work (stuck at the calling, but not really dialing)

Phone becomes really warm and battery drain is too much

There’s not enough button

Overall condition is not really usable for daily use

Couple notes:

If Wifi connects but browser not going anywhere, try the DNS fix

All “adb” type commands require the download of SDK

If Virtual Box can’t connect to the iPhone when doing the ‘./oibc’ portion, you may need to shut down and restart your virtual machine (including the Virtual Box itself)

Going to Apple’s recovery mode (for upgraders) from the openiboot would require you to hold the “Menu” button after choosing the iPhone mode

Post comments for questions and help on how to install iDroid.

Out of the three parts, this is the part where I stumble upon the most “unexpected” issues. First of all, Live CD does not work on my 2nd-gen Macbook Pro (MBP). There seems to be some problem with the ATI drivers on the Live CD that prevents X from starting up. I have to use the Alternate CD with the text-based-installer. Also, GRUB will not install. Fortunately LILO will be offered and it installs just fine. Finally X will not work after the reboot and you need to install some drivers before it will work.

As a start, put in the CD, choose the CD installer from rEFIt then follow the instructions below:

Proceed with the installation regularly until the HDD partitioning portion

Choose to install on /dev/sda3 and format as “reiserfs” with mount point “/”

After disk is formated, go to shell by pressing “Ctrl+Alt+F2″

Run the following commands:

mkdir /mnt/ubuntu
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/ubuntu
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/ubuntu/swap bs=1024 count=2097152
swapon /mnt/ubuntu/swap

When asked for screen resolution, only press spacebar on 1440×900 or lower

Continue until GRUB installation fails. Ignore the failure and install LILO when prompted.

Installation should complete and you should be able to boot into Ubuntu, without X Windows.

Login the run the following commands:

sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r) linux-kernel-headers
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

NOTE: If you don’t know your kernel version number, run the command

echo $(uname -r)

Reboot then run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update

If you don’t hear a login sound, it means your speaker might not be enabled

Troubleshooting

Some warning popup because there is no swap partition / swapon doesn’t work
Ignore it and it will work just fine

There are no sound coming from speaker, but sound is coming from the headphone jack

ZyWALL 35 is a nifty and easy to use firewall in a small, yet rack-mountable form factor. Main feature of ZyWALL product lines includes:

SPI based firewall

IPSec VPN connection

Integrated Anti-Virus, Intrusion Detection and Prevention, Anti-Spam and Content Filtering through third party service

Overall, this product is a great performer while small in dimensions. The front panel hosts 2 WAN ports and 4 LAN/DMZ ports. The LAN/DMZ port can be configured as LAN or DMZ segment from the web interface. At the back, there’s a PC-card slot which can be used with a wireless card or turbo card (UTM), but not both. There’s also a console port and modem port at the back of the unit. The modem port provides additional backup gateway solution through either 56K connection or ISDN.
This firewall also available in the UTM platform which includes a turbo card. The turbo card is necessary for running anti-virus and Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP). The firewall also have an anti-spam and content filtering functionality. All these features require subscription in the form of iCard.

What separates this from other ZyXEL’s firewall is the dual WAN port which can be configured in active/active or active/passive configuration. ZyWALL 35 is the lowest level firewall from ZyXEL that has dual WAN connection. The former is usually used in environments where traffic is split among two networks (load balancing). The former is usually used in environments where secondary traffic is only used when the primary WAN port is down.

Microsoft has acknowledged that Vista’s biggest competitor is none other than Windows XP. Windows XP is the standard desktop operating system in most residential and business computers. Even after almost half a year, XP still reigns supreme as king of desktop OS. The most common question that comes with Windows Vista is “Do I need to update?”. Vista is “supposedly” more secure than any other desktop oriented Windows OS, but how much secure is it? Even if it’s more secure, do you need the extra security? I believe that if someone can understand some basic internet safety, Windows XP is a good enough platform for desktop computing. There’s also Linux as the alternative solution for the brave souls.

In business environment, where upgrades usually comes in batches, switching to Vista might require a lot of changes. A lot of software may not play nice with Vista (i.e. VPN Client Software, Anti-Virus software, Accounting Software, etc). Vista also might require some hardware upgrades. One should really ask again, what is the ROI by switching to Vista? There are some who take the middle-ground stance and upgrade as necessary. For example, some companies I know of, only get new laptops with Vista, but will not upgrade existing fleet of laptops and desktops to Vista.

My personal recommendation for home user: If you’re upgrading your computer hardware, you might as well get Windows Vista as long as other software that you’re going to use also supports it.

Mailmeter is a forensic, archival and policy enforcement tool for Microsoft Exchange Server. It should work with Exchange 5.5 through 2003, but I can only comment for Microsoft Exchange 2003 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.

Mailmeter by Waterford Technologies is a forensic, archival and policy enforcement tool for Microsoft Exchange Server (5.5 – 2007), Lotus Domino (R6, R7 or higher) and IMail (V8, 2006 or higher). For the purpose of this evaluation, I install the Mailmeter software for Microsoft Exchange 2003 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. I think the software does what I expected and more, but installation was not as breeze as I’d like it to be. On the up side, their technical support team is very helpful in answering my questions.

Problems with my installation:

Configuration Wizard Error
When the configuration wizard is supposed to read mails from some mails from accounts in the address book, it fails and reports some XML error. There are no further errors after forcing it to continue with the installation . The tech support indicates that it might be because our mail server is configured with non-FQDN domain for Active Directory, although it also have an FQDN domain for e-mail use. For now this issue is deferred because the primary system is running.

Non-FQDN Windows Domain
Mailmeter expects the Windows domain to be FQDN so the AD based login always fails because it anticipates the missing “.com” or “.net” or whatever suffix available. Not all companies set this to FQDN, so Mailmeter releases a patch so that it will ignore the missing suffix.

Internet Header in Filtering Fails
Mailmeter requires additional plugin to filter out messages that I don’t want to archive. Waterford Technologies says that this is done to protect both the customer and vendor. By having to request the plugin, both parties acknowledges that the filter may be set to discard certain type of messages from being archived. In my case, I set it to ignore all e-mails that’s tagged as spam by SpamAssassin. This is plugin is very easy to install and use. It is a rule based plugin with a default rule to archive anything that doesn’t match any previous filter. I created a rule that will discard any messages that has “X-Spam-Flag: YES” in the internet headers. There’s a bug in the code that prevent the matching against internet headers (it always match it against empty string); thus the rule always fail. They claimed that since Mailmeter is a forensic tool, it is rarely set to discard any messages from being archived. Additionally, they commented that the tool is usually set to match against a specific sender, recipient, or subject, thus the internet header functionality is never fully tested. This issue is resolved within hours after investigation.

The Patch for Item #1 Causes the “Group Builder” Functionality to Fail
<strike> This is a new bug found and is still work in progress.</strike>
UPDATE 6/12/2007: They come up with the fix in less than 2 hours after investigating the issue.

Stubbing Functionality Seems not Working
<strike> This is a new bug found and is still work in progress.</strike>
UPDATE 6/12/2007: After looking into the database, the journaled entry and the content in my mailbox differs by 1 space. Since it’s not the exact same message (from computer’s eye), the message is not stubbed. This issue will be further checked after the near future.

My opinions about Mailmeter and Waterford Technologies:

Their patch turnaround time so far is very fast (less than 24 hours for #2 and less than 4 hours for #3).

Their sales and technical support team is very knowledgeable and helpful. Their technical support team is willing to listen to your complaint and problem thoroughly.

Provided documents are very detailed, but examples needs consistency. The username, password and server name that’s used as example on certain steps are different from the other steps.

Insight and Individual Search & Retrieval can find messages and texts within attachment (tested for PDF, DOC and ZIP) in matter of seconds.

Installations can be very modular or integrated. Each components, the server, database and storage space can be on one single machine or separate entities. The storage space may even be set to a NAS or SAN devices.

Quick glance of mailbox usage/abuse using the MBA or Insight

Find out largest mail sender

Find out most common extensions sent

Find out based on address pairs

Find out based on certain word in the message

(Work In Progress) Stubbing is theoretically compress and cuts mailbox storage up to 90%

(Briefly tested) Outlook add-in integrates searches within outlook with savable search results

Although there are some hiccups during the installation, Waterford Technologies provides exceptional support. This is a definite plus for any software company. The Mailmeter server has been actively collecting e-mails and data from the Exchange server, but end-user usage has been limited to certain technically competent beta testers. The “part 2″ of this review will include more test details and real life scenarios after the system goes “GA Live”.

I just found out an easy way to beat most web/content-filtering system (provided SSH traffic is not blocked). SSH is a good choice because it’s natively installed on most Linux and Mac system. Windows user can download a small software called Putty, which can run without being installed. SSH server also available on almost all Linux server as well as some Linux based routers. Here’s how to do it in Windows:

Download Putty and Run

Type in the IP of Linux box or other SSH server you have access to and make sure the port is correct too

Under the tab “Connection –> SSH –> Tunnel” set a local source port *preferrably random number above 1024*

Under destination choose “Dynamic” and “Auto“

Then click open

Open IE or Firefox and find the proxy configuartion

Set your localhost as the SOCKS proxy server and the port is the local source port you choose on Step 3
NOTE: On Firefox choose SOCKS v5, and on IE include “localhost, 127.0.0.1″ as the addresses exempted by the proxy

That’s all needs to be done.

UPDATE:
For those who wants to use it with IM services like MSN, here’s what you need to do:

Goto Tools -> Options -> Connection

Click on Advanced Settings

On SOCKS type 127.0.0.1 and click Test
